Gavin arrived in South Africa in 1968 and began his career in photography under Lynton Stephenson. He spent most of the 70’s in Cape Town shooting fashion and advertising for most of the leading brands and agencies in SA. He returned to Johannesburg early in the 80’s to begin directing TV commercials. He now represents some of SA’s top photographers as an agent.
Gavin’s journey with The Photographic Archival and Preservation Association of South Africa (PAPA) began in 2000 with a simple yet profound question: What becomes of photographers’ works after they are gone? Driven by this curiosity, he embarked on a mission to ensure that these invaluable cultural and historical artefacts are preserved for future generations.
PAPA, presented by and under his stewardship his a vital effort to safeguard and sustain the works of South African photographers that might otherwise fade into obscurity.
Through a dynamic mix of exhibitions, educational workshops, and online resources, Gavin brings to light the crucial role of photography in documenting South Africa’s rich historical, cultural and social landscapes.
