James Gray will tell the story of the dramatic events leading up to the historic fall of Tobruk in North Africa on 21 June 1942. Over 10,000 South Africans were captured on that disastrous day as General Rommel’s Afrika Korps blitzkrieged the vital Mediterranean seaport. Tobruk’s fall was preceded by the routing of the British 8th Army in the Battle of Gazala which, amongst several other British Divisions, involved the 1st South African Division under General Dan Pienaar and the now legendary 'Gazala Gallop’. Most of the names and details of that fateful summer may have faded, but one name will always loom large: Rommel the Desert Fox. We look more closely at this remarkable soldier.
