Ed Bredenkamp

Painter

Ed Bredenkamp was born and educated in Zimbabwe where he completed his tertiary education at the Zimbabwe College of Art and Industrial Design where he graduated at the top of his class.

Ed works primarily in oils and is most well-known for his unique and dramatic red elephants. While his attention to anatomical detail is meticulous, it is his  vivid use of colours that makes his work so unusual and dramatic. The powerful reds and deep purples help focus attention on the shapes, contours and energy of his subjects. This use of unorthodox colours is also reflecting in many of his other wildlife studies – most notably his recent series of rhinos.

Ed has participated in exhibition in the United Sates, Zimbabwe, South Africa and the Seychelles. He was part of a two-man exhibition in the Hollandse Rading Gallery in the Netherlands in 2001 and in 2010 he exhibited at the Riva D’Arno Gallery in Florence, Italy. In 2013 he took part in a joint exhibition at the Fillingdon Gallery in High Wycombe, UK.

“I love painting wildlife but I think it’s important to challenge oneself as an artist and so at least once a year I try and spend some time exploring new themes and techniques”. This will be evident in the special exhibition he is currently working on for Hermanus FynArts 2015.
